Dwarka was built by Lord Krishna when he left Mathura after numerous attacks by Jarasandh. It is also one of the Char Dhams along with Badrinath, Puri and Rameshwaram. It is believed that people who visit these Char Dham attains Nirvana/ Moksha.

Dwarka is also believed to be the first capital of Gujarat and is part of Devbhoomi Dwarka District. The Dwarkadhish Temple in Dwarka is dedicated to Krishna is an important pilgrimage destination for millions of Hindus.
